Valerie

Valerie Fontanier has always been passionate about Japan and its culture.
She has studied the Japanese language for many years and is a certified Junkako, instructor of Ikebana, 1st Grade of Ikenobō floral art. Trained in the oldest and most renowned Ikebana school in Japan.
As an active member of the Ikenobō Hana no Wa London Study Group, she has studied directly with distinguished professors in London, Tokyo, Kyotango, and at the Ikenobō headquarters in Kyoto.
Her journey in Ikebana includes ongoing classes with her mentor-sensei Junko Kikuchi, senior professor #18 Sokatoku in Japan and in London, as well as participation in workshops and exhibitions in the UK and abroad.
She also attended the Ikenobō World Seminar 2025 in Kyoto and recently trained and exhibited her work at the 2025 European Special Members’ Workshop in Vannes, France, led by the esteemed Professor Moribe from Kyoto.
In January 2026 she was commissioned by the Kokeshi Gallery to create and showcase an Ikebana during the London Art Fair.
Valerie brings her deep knowledge, international experience, and heartfelt passion for Ikebana into every class, offering students both technical guidance and a truly inspiring creative experience.

Ikebana Mood Teaching Philosophy
Ikenobō is the oldest and largest school of ikebana, the Japanese practice of giving plants and flowers invigorated new life. The Buddhist practice of Ikenobo has existed since the building of the Rokkaku-do temple. The actual organized school institution was founded in the 15th century by the Buddhist monk Senno.
Less is more
Ikebana is known as the "aesthetic of subtraction", creating beauty by using as few flowers and leaves as possible and appreciating the elegance of empty space.
The beauty of imperfection
